Good books for second graders

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

Some of you might have just got interested in reading and might not want to start off with really complex books. So, I chose some series that are not too hard to read but are interesting and hilarious. 🙃 When I was in second grade I found that I did not enjoy books that required patient reading to get interesting so, I chose some books below that are amazing right off the bat!

This is my criteria for choosing the books

  • Not too complex; easy to read

  • Funny, fascinating, with exciting plots

  • Transitional books (small to big; graphic novel to big chapter book; simple plots to complex, hard plots)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of the most hilarious series I‘ve ever read! I usually end up rolling on the floor laughing 🤣 . Greg is just starting middle school and keeps trying to act and become cool but it always backfires...in a really funny way! He always ends up in weird funny situations and the Heffleys have to go along with it and figure it out. I would recommend this series if you like to laugh out loud!

Percy Jackson is a very interesting and easy to read series . This series is a modern twist on Greek mythology, there are demigods, gods and lots of monsters! Percy and his friends have to save their world many times together. ( For some reason the gods don’t help that much at all ...) This book made me want to go to Greece and learn more about gods and their children. ( Dad if you’re reading this I still wanna go!) If you like mythology mixed with humor and excitement this is the book for you!

Harry Potter is an intriguing, magical and humorous series that everyone I know LOVES ❤️ ! This book is full of miracles and wizards and witches. ( The good kind! ) This book is about a young boy going through school with his friends, Ron and Hermione. Harry’s parent have been killed by The evil Lord Voldemort and he has to stop him from killing millions of other people with Ron and Hermione . This book grows up with you, Harry has to face many challenges that you might have to face too ( The school problems, not the magic ones!) . If you like magic and humor you will love this series.

The Sisters Eight are easy and fun reads. The sisters each have powers which they earn on their birthday, they have to stop many evil characters. This book is based on superheroes except it has more story and details with less : “Bang! I just beat a villain and now I’m on the news!” These books have mystery, suspense and are very amusing! These are small book and if you are afraid of big books this is a great series to start with. If you like magic, mysteries and funny stuff you will appreciate this series a lot!

Aventurine is a fierce, stubborn dragon who gets changed into a human and falls in love with chocolate 🍫 . This is an adventurous and captivating story that drew me in. Aventurine goes on an mission to eat, live and breathe chocolate (I would like too to but for now I have to study and prep for SSAT *sigh* hmph ). Along the way she discovers that the kingdom is trying to kill her family and she has to stop them. If you want to hear about a young headstrong girl who defies almost the whole kingdom 😲😋 you should read this book!

August is a de-figured child who is very kind but gets bullied because of his looks but he and his friends persevere through it all. You might be scared to read this book because it seems sad but it is not that upsetting, August forgives the bully and gets through it all with a strong heart. You should read this book if you want to read about a persistent, strong kid who fights off lots of bad things and finally has peace.
