This year’s election was very important. It decided what happens about COVID, racial injustice, and many more problems. But, every election is just as important. You, the people, get to decide the next president. It doesn’t matter what gender, what party, or what age you are (Well, you have to be 18). If you are a citizen in the US you can vote and you should take advantage of that, in a good way.
Our ancestors fought so hard for women, colored and younger people to be allowed to vote. They have sacrificed so much and we have to respect that, we have to put all their work to use. Many people take voting for granted, because they don’t think about the history of voting, and the big differences between then and now.
Before the major changes, only white men over 21 could vote. We, the people decided that that was not okay. There were many different forms of protests and eventually the people in power got sick of it and changed the rules. Now men 21 and over could vote. Gradually colored men could vote but, the government did all kind of things so it was even harder for them, they created taxes that the people could not afford and made rules that excluded them. After a long time women were finally allowed to vote. This was just the start of some big changes that would affect our country.
Exercise your right to vote, because it matters! The president plays a huge role in our country and we have to make sure that he (or she!) follows our values, as a whole. We the people, the country, and the population get to choose who gets that role, and we have to do our best.
I know this may sound like big words, coming from a 10 year old in fifth grade, but I have seen what is happening to our country and some changes, are not for the better. I know some states have changed their deadline and was a great opportunity to go out and vote . Your vote decides what kind of country I will grow up in and what my future will look like. Hopefully, you already voted, if you could. Your vote matters.
Thank you and have a great day!
